Religioso
Devout stillness — not slow motion with the volume down
Related
Religioso comes from Latin religiosus, related to religio, "religion, reverence". The music should take on the posture of prayer: an even pace, restrained volume, phrases held as if in both hands, in no hurry to finish.
It is not simply "quiet": at its centre are reverence and attention, and it can be devout even at full volume. The usual mistake is to treat religioso as a default setting of slow plus soft — without inward attention, slow and soft only sound empty.
It appears in slow movements, masses and requiems, and in prayer scenes of opera; beside maestoso and sostenuto it shows how majesty, sustain and devotion each do their work.
