Pingtan

Suzhou storytelling and balladry, narrative song in Wu dialect with pipa and sanxian

Pingtan is the joint name of Suzhou pinghua and Suzhou tanci. It is narrative song, not opera and not a theatre genre. Pinghua is spoken only: one storyteller at a table, using a wooden block, a folding fan and vocal mimicry. Tanci mixes speech and song, accompanied by pipa and sanxian, in solo, duo or trio formats; famous repertories include The Jade Dragonfly and The Pearl Pagoda.

Tanci singing is built on the shudiao tune in banqiang form, with qupai and folk melodies woven in. Performers shape it in personal schools such as Jiang, Yu and Li — a school is an individual style, not a vocal tradition. Pingtan is sung in Wu dialect, and the language itself is an instrument: tone, pace and articulation supply much of its flavour.
