Piano (dynamic)

The dynamic mark p — soft, but not a fixed decibel level

Piano (p) is the dynamic mark for soft, paired with forte. P is not a fixed decibel level: the p of chamber music and the p of a symphony sit at completely different sound pressures, and the same instrument's p differs between registers.

It is not "weak" either: a good piano still has core and projection, only at a lower volume. The usual mistake is to make p as soft as possible — softness that loses colour falls apart; dynamics are proportions, not absolutes.
