Forte

The dynamic mark f — loud, but not a fixed decibel level

Forte (f) is the dynamic mark for loud. It pairs with piano (soft) as the two most common dynamic poles. F is not a fixed decibel level: the f of chamber music and the f of a symphony sit at completely different sound pressures, and the same instrument's f differs between registers.

It is not "force" either: a good forte still has colour and control, not a pushed sound on the edge of breaking. The usual mistake is to read f as the maximum setting of a volume knob — a dynamic mark is a relative proportion: it says "louder than the surroundings", not "how many decibels".
