Performing Rights Organization
An organisation that licenses public performance and pays writers and publishers
Related
A performing rights organization (PRO) licenses public performance of songs on behalf of writers and publishers and collects royalties: radio, television, venues, shops and streaming all fall within its scope. It is usually a non-profit collective that distributes income according to usage data.
It covers the composition performance right, not the recording; in many countries a separate body collects public-performance income for recordings. The usual mistake is to think joining guarantees all the money: work registration, performance data and foreign income all affect distribution. This is general information, not legal advice.
