Frenchflûte de Pan

The pan flute is a row of stopped pipes of different lengths, blown across the open tops; pitch is fixed by pipe length. English says pan flute or panpipes, Italian flauto di Pan, German Panflöte and French flûte de Pan, all pointing to the god Pan in Greek myth. The Chinese 排箫 names both the ancient instrument and similar instruments worldwide (a common usage).

Watch out: the pan flute is not a single pipe but a row of stopped pipes; it differs from the recorder, having no duct or fingerholes: the player moves from pipe to pipe. Andean panpipes (siku or zampoña) resemble the Chinese paixiao but belong to a different tradition.
