Monitor Controller
A desktop unit for monitor level, switching and talkback
Related
A monitor controller is the monitoring hub on the desk: it sets monitor level, switches between speaker pairs, toggles mono/stereo, and handles talkback and headphones. It saves hunting for a fader in software.
It differs from a mixing console: a controller manages only the monitoring path, not every record and mix channel; it differs from an audio interface too: the interface converts, the controller switches and attenuates. The usual mistake is to think software volume is enough — a hardware controller gives reliable physical switching and talkback, especially in a session.
