Misterioso

A veiled, mysterious colour — not slow motion plus pedal

Misterioso comes from the Italian mistero, "secret, mystery", from Latin mysterium and further Greek mystērion, a secret rite. The colour should be veiled: volume drawn in, outline slightly blurred, harmonic aims left unspoken.

It describes colour and atmosphere, not speed. Misterioso can move at a moderate pace or very slowly; what matters is that the tension holds and the music does not fall apart. The usual mistake is to play it "slow, soft, pedal down" — a single blur only becomes drowsy; mystery needs controlled blur with direction underneath.
