Milonga

One of tango's ancestors — faster, lighter, more rural

Milonga is an Argentine-Uruguayan song-and-dance genre, often seen as one of tango's ancestors: faster, lighter in rhythm, closer to rural and street life. The word can also mean a tango dance party, but as music the milonga has its own repertoire and vocabulary.

It differs from tango: tango is slower and more dramatic, the milonga springier and more colloquial. The usual mistake is to call milonga a "fast tango" — they are related genres, not one thing at two speeds.
