Lugubre

A gloomy, mournful manner

Lugubre is an expression mark: play with gloom, mournfulness and weight. It is darker and heavier than mesto, often tied to the low register, minor mode and slow harmony.

It differs from doloroso: doloroso is intensity of pain, lugubre is shadow and atmosphere. The usual mistake is to play it very slow and soft — gloom can have weight and pressure; the point is whether the colour darkens.
