Doloroso

A manner of pain and grief

Doloroso is an expression mark: play with pain and grief. It is stronger than mesto ("sad"), often tied to falling sigh figures, pressing harmony and unstable colour.

It differs from languido: languido is weary and weak, doloroso is pain with weight. The usual mistake is to play it very slow and soft — grief can be intense; the point is the weight of pain in the sound, not the speed.
