KV Number

The German form of Mozart's K. number — the same catalogue

Köchel NumberOpusJ. Number (Weber)

KV numbers are the German form of Mozart's K. numbers (Köchelverzeichnis, the Köchel catalogue). They name the same catalogue in another language; German scholarship uses KV, English often K.

They differ from Op.: Mozart's opus numbers relate weakly to chronology, while KV is a scholarly catalogue. The usual mistake is to think KV and K are two systems — they are one; KV 367 is K. 367.
