Insert

A processor placed in line so the whole channel signal passes through it

An insert places a processor directly in a channel's signal path: the whole signal passes through it before continuing. Compression, EQ and de-essing usually sit in inserts because they must act on everything that channel carries.

Insert order changes the result: cutting lows before compression sounds different from compressing first and cutting later. Insert effects are normally 100 percent wet with no dry blend, which is why reverb and delay are better placed on sends and returns.

The usual mistake is to treat inserts and sends as interchangeable. An insert changes the entire channel; a send takes only a portion. Use a send when the effect is shared or the dry signal must stay intact.
