Giusto

Back to the "right, proper" tempo or character

Giusto ("right, proper") appears most often in tempo giusto: return to the tempo proper to this music — not a fixed BPM, but the speed that fits the dance character, phrasing and harmonic rhythm.

It differs from a tempo: a tempo returns to the speed just before, tempo giusto returns to the speed the piece itself demands. The usual mistake is to read giusto as a number — it asks for judgement; two players can give different BPMs for the same tempo giusto.
