Giocoso

Light-hearted and teasing — playful rather than slapstick

Giocoso comes from the Italian gioco, "game, play, joke", from Latin jocus. The music should carry a sense of play: a smiling phrase ending, a wry accent, a springy rhythm.

It describes disposition, not speed. Giocoso can be moderate, or light and quiet, as long as the tone teases. The usual mistake is to turn it into slapstick or a race — a real joke has measure, and lives in the surprise of the phrasing and a light close, not in exaggeration and acceleration.
