The electric guitar is a plucked instrument whose magnetic pickups turn string vibration into an electrical signal, usually needing an amplifier and speaker to produce its familiar sound. Italian chitarra elettrica, German E-Gitarre and French guitare électrique all say "electric guitar". It became practical in the 1930s and settled into the solid body in the 1950s, becoming central to popular music.
Watch out: it is not an acoustic guitar with a pickup added — a solid-body electric does not rely on a resonating box, and its tone depends largely on pickups, wood and circuitry. It is also not an electric bass, despite the similar shape.
