The electric bass, also called bass guitar, is a plucked instrument with four strings (sometimes five or six) tuned E1–A1–D2–G2, an octave below the guitar. Italian basso elettrico, German E-Bass and French basse électrique all mean "electric bass". After the Fender Precision Bass appeared in 1951, it gradually replaced the double bass as the foundation of popular bands.
Watch out: it is not simply a low guitar — it carries the bass line, with thicker strings, a longer scale and a different playing approach. Chinese 贝斯 can also mean the double bass, a wooden instrument; the two should not be mixed up.
