Dynamic EQ

EQ that moves only when a band crosses a threshold, following the material

Dynamic EQ is an equalizer with a threshold: a band boosts or cuts only when its level passes the setting, and stays almost still when the material is quiet. It is close to fitting a compressor's detector into a single EQ band.

It suits problems that appear only occasionally: a nasal phrase in a vocal, a resonant drum hit, a note that jumps out on the bass. Unlike a static EQ it does not thin the passages that need no correction; unlike a multiband compressor it moves only the chosen band.

The usual mistake is to use dynamic EQ as a substitute for compression. It balances frequency ranges, not overall dynamics; pushed too far, the tone shifts with level and the sound becomes unstable.
