Diaomen (Pitch Level for Singing)

The key a singer or ensemble settles on, and the flute fingering that names it

Diaomen is the pitch level settled on for singing or ensemble playing. Opera singers choose it by the range of their voice, so the same aria may sit at different levels for different singers, while the band follows by changing the flute's fingering or swapping to another flute.

Flutes name keys after fingerings — xiaogongdiao, zhenggongdiao, liuzidiao, yizidiao — each with a fixed open-note and hole pattern, so one flute can move key by changing fingering alone. Diaomen is not gongdiao: gongdiao is the theoretical pairing of pitch level and mode, diaomen the actual height chosen for an occasion; in everyday speech, "high diaomen" has also come to mean a grand manner or high standards.
