Gongdiao
The Chinese concept pairing pitch level with modal colour
Related
Gongdiao is the Chinese pairing of pitch level and mode: gong fixes where the scale sits, while diao decides which note is the centre and which way the melody turns. One gong can carry several modes, and the same mode can be moved by xuangong, hence the idea of rotating the gong and modulating.
In opera and narrative song, gongdiao becomes a practical key or fingering: flute parts are named after fingerings such as xiaogongdiao and zhenggongdiao, and singers choose a key for their voice and the scene. Gongdiao is not Western major or minor: it does not assume two fixed colours but places scale, centre and flute key on one relational map. Gongche notation is read together with gongdiao; change the gong and the whole piece moves.
