Cut Time

2/2 — two half-note beats to the bar, written with a slashed C

Cut time is written 𝄵 — a C with a vertical stroke — and its formal name is alla breve. It gives two half-note beats to the bar: the bar still holds four quarter notes, but the counting unit moves from the quarter to the half, with the main accents on the two big beats.

It is often called "faster 4/4", yet the notation does more than speed things up. A larger beat changes the centre of gravity: the same notes stress a two-beat frame, which suits marches, fast symphonic movements and contrapuntal passages.

A common mistake is to see the stroke as a simple reminder to play fast. The stroke first changes the beat unit and grouping; the quicker pace follows from that.
