Alla Breve
The "short" style of taking the half note as the beat, often synonymous with cut time
Related
Alla breve literally means "in the short style": taking the half note (or the older breve) as the beat, nowadays usually treated as cut time (2/2). It is both a matter of time signature and a stylistic signal — the voices should move more continuously, and harmony should be shaped around a two-beat frame rather than counted quarter by quarter.
Historically it is tied to Renaissance and Baroque polyphony, where choirs beat the breve and the music gained a broader breath. The same 4/4 written alla breve feels "larger", because the accents shrink from four beats to two.
A common mistake is to treat alla breve as only a tempo term. It first fixes the beat unit; a quicker pace is merely a frequent consequence.
