Chanzhuan

A Song-era narrative song suite built from qupai

Chanzhuan is a Song-era narrative song suite: several qupai linked together, accompanied by drum and clappers, telling a story. It is an important early form of qupai-based narrative song and influenced later zhugongdiao and opera.

It differs from zhugongdiao: zhugongdiao crosses several gongdiao and is larger, while chanzhuan usually links qupai within one gongdiao. The usual mistake is to treat chanzhuan as just "singing tunes" — it is a narrative genre with a fixed suite structure, not a random set of songs.
