Bravura

A character mark calling for brilliant, daring display

Bravura comes from the Italian for "bravery" and "skill"; in music it names a brilliant, daring style of performance. It can describe a piece's manner or a player's stance: scales clean, leaps decisive, high notes secure.

Bravura is not simply loud or fast. Real bravura makes control visible: the hard passage is despatched cleanly, and the listener hears ease in the middle of danger rather than panic. It sits near con brio and energico but stresses display; with noise and no outline, it collapses into swagger.
