Berceuse
A quiet cradle song, the left hand swaying while the melody sings above
Related
A berceuse is a lullaby and also an instrumental miniature: usually in 6/8 or 2/4, the left hand alternating tonic and dominant bass notes like a cradle swaying, the right hand repeating a short, quiet melody.
Chopin's Berceuse in D flat major spreads a series of variations over a two-bar bass figure, its ornament growing finer while the sway never stops. Brahms's Wiegenlied is the famous vocal example; Fauré and Ravel also wrote instrumental berceuses.
Listen for the regularity of the bass cycle and the tiny changes hidden in the repeated melody. The tenderness of a berceuse comes from restraint: slow tempo, soft dynamics, gentle harmony — any exaggeration wakes the child.
