Character Piece
A short piece built around a single character — the piano miniature at its most typical
Related
A character piece is a short instrumental work in which one instrument, usually the piano, seizes a single character, mood or scene in a page or two: impromptus, moments musicaux, songs without words and berceuses all belong here.
It unfolds not through a large form but through the repeated polishing of one vivid idea; titles usually point to a character rather than a story, as in "intermezzo" or "album leaf". Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Faure turned the genre into a private diary.
Do not mistake small for simple. The difficulty lies in building a complete atmosphere from very little material; small changes of phrasing, register and pedalling alter the character. Listen first for the idea that keeps returning, then for what is different each time it comes back.
