The bass clarinet is the low member of the clarinet family, usually in B flat and sounding a major ninth below its written notes. Italian clarinetto basso, German Bassklarinette and French clarinette basse all simply say "bass clarinet". It has a single reed, a folded body and an upward bell, and it supplies a dark, soft low woodwind colour.
Watch out: it is often confused with the contrabassoon, but the two work differently — the bass clarinet is single-reeded and softer-edged, the contrabassoon double-reeded and heavier.
