Animando

Becoming more animated — often with a slight quickening

Animando means "becoming more animated": it can mean a more lively character, and may bring a slight quickening. It differs from animato ("animated") in being in the process of becoming, not already there.

It is close to con moto, but animando stresses life rather than mere drive. The usual mistake is to read it as a fixed tempo — it is a process; listen for whether the music wakes up, not for how much the BPM moves.
