Yu Opera
A Henan opera genre from the bangzi family, known for bold singing and the banhu fiddle
Related
Yu opera, also called Henan bangzi, is a genre from Henan belonging to the bangzi vocal family. Its singing is bold and ringing, led by the banhu fiddle with bangzi clapper and gongs; traditional plays include Hua Mulan and Mu Guiying Takes Command, while the modern Chaoyang Village is equally well known.
Its music belongs to banqiang form, organising arias through erba, manban, liushui and feiban metres. Yudong, Yuxi, Xiangfu and Shahe are regional tunes and schools, not four genres; bangzi is the cross-genre vocal tradition. To say Yu opera belongs to bangzi is not to say it is bangzi.
