Transposition
Shifting a whole passage by the same interval into another key
Related
Transposition moves a whole passage by the same interval into another key. Intervals and melodic shape stay the same; only absolute pitch changes.
Notation uses it in two ways. Music for a transposing instrument is written a fixed interval from sounding pitch, and converting a score to concert pitch, or the reverse, is also transposition.
Transposition is not modulation. Modulation changes the tonal centre inside a work; transposition moves the whole thing. Key signature, accidentals and range all have to be recalculated, and changing the signature alone will produce errors.
