The snare drum is a cylindrical double-headed drum with wires stretched under the lower head; when struck, the wires buzz and give the crisp, rattling tone. It has no definite pitch and is common in orchestras, military bands and drum kits; Italian calls it tamburo militare or rullante, German kleine Trommel, French caisse claire.
Watch out: "snare" names the wires under the head, not the drum's size or a stick. Chinese 小军鼓 is paired with 大鼓, but the two differ in more than size.
