Shengqiang (Vocal Tradition)
A tune system shared across opera genres, such as Kunqiang, Gaoqiang, Bangzi or Pihuang
Related
Shengqiang is a vocal tradition shared across opera genres: a group of genres that, through history, melodic style and mode, sing in the same idiom. Kunqiang, gaoqiang, bangzi and pihuang are the four commonly named traditions; Peking, Han and Hui opera all sing pihuang, so they belong to the pihuang tradition.
A shengqiang is neither a genre nor a metrical pattern. A genre answers "which show", a shengqiang answers "which way of singing", while banshi is the metrical shape of an aria (yuanban, manban, liushui). One vocal tradition can support many genres, and one genre can sing several traditions.
