Program Music
Instrumental music that follows a story or image outside music — the title is only the door
Related
Program music is instrumental music issued with a title, a written note or a plot, its course shaped by the places, characters or events the title names. Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique runs a fixed idea through five movements, and Liszt placed the one-movement programmatic symphony at the centre of the repertory.
It stands against absolute music, which is held together by musical structure alone. Yet a programme is not an instruction sheet but a signpost: one listener follows the story, another hears only thematic transformation and harmonic direction, and both readings hold.
To judge program music, ask how much the title supplies: a general mood, or a scene-by-scene correspondence. The more specific the title, the more closely you should notice where the music departs from it — the departure is often what the work really wants to say.
