Presto

A very fast tempo, roughly 168–200 beats per minute

Presto marks a very fast tempo, often around 168–200 beats per minute. The word comes from Italian presto, "quick, nimble". It aims not merely at speed but at lightness and clarity: past a certain density the listener hears a gesture rather than individual notes.

Faster still is Prestissimo. The usual mistake is to treat Presto as "the faster the better" — once speed exceeds what fingers and ears can organise, only noise remains. A real Presto makes velocity sound effortless.
