Perdendosi
Fading while losing its outline, as if drifting out of earshot
Related
Perdendosi comes from perdersi, "to lose oneself". It asks the sound to lose clarity and presence as it fades, as if drifting out of earshot, and is common at very quiet endings. It is more subjective than a plain diminuendo: not just less volume, but music losing its bearings.
Beside morendo, perdendosi stresses the collapse of outline: thinner tone, blurred attacks, looser rhythmic edges, until only a trace remains. It does not mean the player gives up control; control moves to a finer level, with steadier bow speed, breath and pedal. It often joins calando or smorzando, and rarely appears with a sudden drop: the point is distance, not a stop.
