Part

The music for one player only, extracted from the score for rehearsal and performance

A part is the music of one player, extracted from the score; it prints only what that player must play, and other lines appear at most as cue notes.

Parts are made for use. Page turns need rests, long rests need bar counts, rehearsal marks must match the score, and entries after solos or long silences often carry cues. For transposing instruments the part is written at written pitch, and the player transposes.

A part is not a proportional crop of the score. It is edited: page layout, cues and clef changes all exist to prevent errors on stage, so the same music may look different in score and part.
