Oversampling
Processing at a higher rate to reduce aliasing
Related
Oversampling temporarily raises the sample rate for processing, then converts back. It is mainly used in non-linear processing such as distortion, saturation and limiting, to reduce aliasing folding back into the audible band.
It differs from recording at a high sample rate: oversampling is a temporary internal upsample, not a change to the project rate. The usual mistake is to expect it to "improve" the sound — its goal is fewer processing artifacts; in clean processing the audible difference can be small.
