Neighboring Rights

Rights of performers, record producers and broadcasters, next to copyright

Neighbouring rights (related rights) sit next to copyright and usually belong to performers, record producers and broadcasters: performers control the recording and use of their performances, producers control reproduction and communication of recordings. They protect performances and recordings, not the song itself.

One track can therefore carry composition copyright, performers' rights and producers' rights at once. The usual mistake is to think a composition licence covers the original recording: using the recording also requires neighbouring-rights clearance. Names and terms vary by country, so know which layer you are assigning. This is general information, not legal advice.
