Mambo
A Cuban-New York dance — heavy brass, aggressive rhythm
Related
Mambo is a dance genre developed in Cuba and New York in the 1940s–50s: built on son, with thicker brass, harder rhythm and more elaborate arranging; Pérez Prado and Tito Puente took it to international ballrooms.
Its relation to salsa is generational: mambo is earlier and leans toward big band and ballroom, salsa later and more syncretic. The usual mistake is to call mambo "fast salsa" — its brass writing and dance steps have their own tradition; it is not just a tempo difference.
