Loudness Normalization

Bringing tracks to the same perceptual loudness target

Loudness normalization brings tracks to the same perceptual loudness target: streaming platforms often use LUFS and adjust on playback, so listeners need not change volume for every song.

It differs from peak normalization: peak normalisation preserves peaks, loudness normalisation preserves the listening impression; it differs from compression too: normalisation changes overall level, not internal dynamics. The usual mistake is to think a louder master is louder on a platform — the platform turns loud tracks down; the loudness war is pointless in a normalised world.
