Licensing Deal

A deal granting use rights within an agreed scope, term and territory

A licensing deal grants another party the right to use a work or recording within an agreed scope, common in sync, samples, merchandise and foreign exploitation. It concerns a licence, not a sale of copyright: scope, territory, term, exclusivity and payment are the core terms.

The usual mistake is to think a paid licence covers any use: going beyond the agreed purpose, territory or term is still infringement, and verbal renewals or tolerated use often leave disputes. Before signing, check the use cases, sublicensing and stock handling after termination. This is general information, not legal advice.
