Largo
Broad and slow, roughly 40–60 beats per minute
Related
Largo marks a broad, slow tempo, often around 40–60 beats per minute. The word comes from Italian largo, "wide". It is not only slow but requires width of sound: long notes must be sustained and phrase endings must not sag.
Compared with Adagio, Largo is more solemn and less flowing; in Baroque music it can also name a dance character rather than a number. The difficulty of Largo is not slowing down but keeping the sound moving forward once it is slow.
