Headphone Mix
Mixing on headphones, clear on detail but needing speaker checks for space and bass
Related
A headphone mix is a mix made or checked on headphones. Headphones bypass the room, exposing detail, noise and panning, which suits small spaces, night work and track-by-track editing.
Their limits are clear: the channels are fully isolated with no crossfeed, so images often seem too wide; bass depends on the earcup seal and differs from speakers; long sessions tire the ears. Work on neutral headphones, add a little crossfeed, and switch to speakers and mono checks often.
The usual mistake is treating headphone mixing as a replacement for monitors. Headphones are good at finding faults, not at judging overall balance; the final call should still be confirmed in a trustworthy room.
