Fioritura
Florid embellishment of a melodic line
Related
Fioritura is florid embellishment of a melodic line — literally "flowering": fast scales, arpeggios and ornaments added to the main melody so the phrase blossoms. It is common in opera arias and instrumental concertos.
It is close to coloratura, but fioritura stresses the ornamental passage, while coloratura stresses a vocal technique type. The usual mistake is to think more fioritura is more brilliant — it must grow from the phrase's skeleton; embellishment without a skeleton is just a scale exercise.
