Dynamic Microphone

A rugged moving-coil microphone that handles high sound pressure without power

A dynamic microphone attaches a coil to a diaphragm. Sound moves the coil through a magnetic field and induces a signal. The simple, sturdy construction needs no phantom power, which makes it a common choice for live work and drums.

Its diaphragm and coil add mass, so high-frequency detail and transients are less airy than a condenser's, but it tolerates high sound pressure, rough handling and changing humidity. Many models use a cardioid pattern; close work adds low end through proximity effect, which can be used or corrected.

The usual mistake is limiting dynamics to loud sources. Good models record vocals and guitar amps too, though they need clean preamp gain. Check the source and placement before deciding whether one fits.
