The djembe is a single-headed hand drum from the Mande region of West Africa: a goblet-shaped body covered with goatskin, played directly with both hands and producing low, middle and high tones. English, German and Italian all write djembe, French djembé, and Chinese also uses 坚贝鼓 or 非洲手鼓. It is usually played with a set of dunun drums, forming the core of Mande drumming (a common account).
Watch out: the djembe is not the same as the dunun — the djembe is the goblet-shaped, bare-handed lead drum, while the dunun is a cylindrical bass drum struck with sticks, usually in a set of three that carries the rhythmic skeleton.
