Divisive Rhythm

Rhythm made by dividing a larger time span into equal smaller units

Divisive rhythm divides a larger time span into equal smaller units: the whole note into halves, quarters and eighths. The metrical hierarchy of Western notation and the bar is largely built this way.

Division produces a steady pulse and regular accents, yet the surface can still be disturbed by syncopation, tuplets and cross-accents. A march or a waltz is divisive at its base; surface complexity does not cancel the underlying equal division.

Divisive rhythm is not "simple rhythm". It describes how time is divided, not how busy the surface is, and each layer of a polyrhythm is divided too. Set against additive rhythm, one divides downwards and the other adds upwards. Ask how many parts the unit is divided into, and which level carries the accent.
