Deutsch Number (D.)
Deutsch's thematic catalogue of Schubert, numbered largely in order of composition
Related
D. is the Deutsch number, from Otto Erich Deutsch's catalogue of Schubert, published in 1951. It is arranged by date of composition, from D. 1 to nearly D. 1000: D. 911 is Winterreise, D. 960 the last piano sonata, and the larger the number, the later the work.
The exceptions come from the plan. Vocal, piano and chamber works of the same years are interleaved; works discovered later had to be added in an appendix or with letters, outside the original sequence. A D. number gives a rough position, not the date itself. Schubert also published with opus numbers, so the "Erlkönig" is both Op. 1 and D. 328.
The usual mistake is to treat D. as a mark of quality or difficulty. D. 960 differs from D. 1 in date, not in worth. The number records when a work was written, not what it is worth.
