The celesta is a keyboard percussion instrument: keys drive small hammers that strike metal bars, each with a wooden resonator below, producing a clear, bell-like sound. Patented in Paris by Auguste Mustel in 1886, it takes its name from French céleste, "heavenly"; Chinese 钢片琴 refers to the steel bars. Italian and German write celesta, French célesta.
Watch out: the celesta is neither a piano nor a glockenspiel — it is played from a keyboard and its bars have resonators, which gives a softer, longer-ringing tone than the glockenspiel.
