Bass Trap

Deep absorbers for low-frequency standing waves, usually placed across corners

Bass traps target low-frequency standing waves and energy building up in corners. Bass wavelengths are long, so thin absorbers barely affect them; effective traps need depth, or porous material with an air gap behind it.

A common build is a thick mineral-wool panel straddling a corner, or a membrane or Helmholtz resonator tuned to a specific band. Several smaller traps spread around the room usually give a more even result than one huge unit. Measure the room first to see which frequency is actually the problem.

The usual mistake is expecting EQ to replace traps. EQ changes the direct sound, while standing waves still vary from seat to seat; traps reduce the energy build-up itself.
